GammaTile: A New Hope for Brain Tumor Patients at Atlantic Brain and Spine
Dr. Jeffrey Beecher recently performed the first GammaTile procedure at Novant Health, offering new hope for patients with aggressive brain tumors. The innovative treatment involves implanting a small, postage-stamp-sized device at the site of a removed tumor. The GammaTile device delivers targeted radiation to prevent tumor regrowth, making it especially beneficial for patients whose tumors resist standard treatments. Christine McGeorge, the first patient to undergo this procedure at Novant Health, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, and her tumors returned after traditional treatments failed.
McGeorge’s case made her an ideal candidate for GammaTile, which has provided her with an opportunity to continue her fight against cancer while maintaining her quality of life. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, GammaTile allows patients to receive continuous radiation without interrupting their daily activities. Dr. Beecher, along with radiation oncologist Dr. Tiffany Morgan, highlighted the significance of this technology in addressing recurrent tumors, offering patients like McGeorge a more manageable and hopeful path forward.
Nearly three months after her surgery, McGeorge remains optimistic, living a largely normal life, with the hope that GammaTile will help manage her cancer in the long term. Her prognosis has improved from the typical 16-month life expectancy associated with glioblastoma to 24 months, a promising sign of the treatment’s effectiveness. Both her doctors and McGeorge are hopeful that GammaTile will become a standard treatment for brain tumors, potentially improving both the duration and quality of life for many patients facing this challenging diagnosis.
